Diary August 28-October 14, 1881, of Oldfield's voyage from Queesnstown, Ireland, to New York City, describing shipboard life and his social contacts following his arrival in New York. While in the United States he visited Newport, R.I.; Boston, Mass.; Lyme, Mass.; Philadelphia, Pa.; Baltimore, Md.; Washington, D.C.; Newark, N.J., and Princeton, N.J. and Niagra Falls and Albany, N.Y. He also describes the mood after the death of President Garfield and makes frequent references to attendance at church services.

James Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1831. After embarking on an academic career, he joined the Ohio volunteer infantry regiment, and in 1863 was appointed Major General in the same regiment. He served as a member of the U. S. House of Representatives from 1863 to 1880, when he was elected President.
